Cultural Capital at Shepherdswell Church of England Primary School

At Shepherdswell Church of England Primary School, cultural capital sits at the heart of our mission to ensure every child fulfils their God given potential. Guided by our Christian vision – a school family with God at the centre - we provide rich opportunities that enable children to flourish academically, socially, morally and spiritually. Every child is valued, loved and supported so that individual needs shape a learning experience where all can grow.

Our values of Love, Gratitude, Justice and Determination underpin everything we do. These values inform the experiences we offer and the way we nurture pupils to understand the world beyond their immediate community.

Our Approach: Rooted in Our Three Identities

We Are Wellbeing Warriors

Cultural capital begins with helping children understand themselves and others. We teach pupils to appreciate everyday moments, show kindness and recognise the importance of belonging. As Wellbeing Warriors, children learn to care, communicate and support one another - reflecting our value of Love. They grow in confidence, resilience and self-awareness, preparing them to engage positively with the wider world.

We Are Lifelong Learners

Our curriculum ensures pupils gain the knowledge, vocabulary and skills they need to thrive. As Lifelong Learners, children develop curiosity, creativity and strong reasoning skills, embodying our value of Determination. We create opportunities for academic excellence while nurturing the confidence and independence needed for future success. Pupils experience a rich, diverse education that broadens their horizons and deepens their understanding.

We Are Courageous Adventurers

We encourage children to embrace new experiences, step beyond their comfort zones and face challenges with courage. As Courageous Adventurers, pupils learn that mistakes are opportunities and that exploration leads to growth - an expression of our value of Gratitude for the opportunities they receive. Through this adventurous mindset, they also come to appreciate fairness, equality and what it means to stand up for others, linking strongly with our value of Justice.

The Shepherdswell Inspire & Explore Programme

To ensure every child at Shepherdswell benefits from memorable, meaningful experiences, we offer a carefully designed programme of enrichment from Reception to Year 6. Each year group takes part in an educational visit or activity that enhances curriculum learning and builds cultural capital.

Reception – Theatre Visit
Children experience live performance, storytelling and the arts, igniting imagination and creativity.

Year 1 – Beach Trip
Pupils explore the natural world, develop geographical understanding and learn through hands-on discovery.

Year 2 – Leeds Castle
A historic site brings learning to life, enriching pupils’ knowledge of heritage, culture and British history.

Year 3 – Zoo Visit
Children deepen their understanding of biodiversity, conservation and global responsibility.

Year 4 – Watersports
Outdoor adventurous activities build resilience, teamwork and self-belief.

Year 5 – London Visit
A trip to the capital city broadens awareness of national institutions, culture, landmarks and diversity.

Year 6 – Theme Park & Residential
End-of-primary experiences develop independence, confidence, responsibility and lasting memories. These visits help children build the cultural awareness, personal development and life skills they need to engage confidently with the world.

A Foundation for Life

Cultural capital at Shepherdswell is about far more than trips and activities - it is woven through our ethos, curriculum, worship, relationships and daily experiences. We strive to equip our pupils with:

  • a strong moral foundation
  • appreciation of the arts, culture and heritage
  • understanding of community and responsibility
  • confidence to advocate for justice
  • determination to achieve their personal best

By the time children leave Shepherdswell, they do so as compassionate individuals - ready for the next stage of their journey, with a deep understanding of who they are and the difference they can make.
